Somerset’s Little Big Shots
Throughout this term we have had around 60 students participating in Little Big Shots. The students have been very keen to showcase their talents and share some of their outside school interests. This year we have been entertained by: magicians, comedians, baton twirler, dancers, singers, gymnasts, martial arts and animal carers. Little Big Shots is also a wonderful opportunity for our students to enact our values of BELIEVE/COURAGE, DREAM and GROW.
Congratulations to our finalists:
- Bailey, Charlee-Rae and Allyssa – Cup Song
- Charlie – Baton Twirling
- Erin – Irish Dancing
- Millie, Daniella, Meg and Ava – Singing
- Ella, Shaylee, Aylah, Shukuya and Anina – Gymnastics
- Mia and Amarli – Dancing
- Aiden, Jake and Ethan – Martial Arts
Our final will be held on Friday 27 September at 1:45 if you would like to come along and celebrate our students’ talents with us.
Digital Technologies
Over the last eighteen months we have been focussing on the Access, Participate and Engage priority in our School Improvement Plan. This has included integrating: more inquiry based learning, STEAM challenges, Digital Technologies and outdoor learning.
On Tuesday 17 September our teachers were involved in an after school professional learning at Burnie Primary School to explore different technologies to support the teaching and learning of the Digital Technology Curriculum. This included trialling coding apps and manipulating technologies such as Spheros, Drones and Merge Cubes. As you can see from the photos below, all our teachers were highly engaged and are very keen to build our resources to support the DT Curriculum at Somerset Primary.
Digital Technologies is a highly engaging element of the Australian Curriculum and General Capabilities and aims to develop important life-long, knowledge, skills and understanding, such as:
- working individually and collaboratively to identify and solve problems
- investigating, designing, planning, managing, creating and evaluating solutions
- being creative, innovative and enterprising when using traditional and emerging technologies, and understanding how technologies have developed over time
- coding, selecting and manipulating appropriate technologies.
Grade 6 Celebration Assembly
The majority of people voted for a 1pm start to our Grade 6 Celebration assembly. Due to this on the 16 December our assembly will begin at 1pm. We look forward to seeing you all there.
On the 10th Sept 2019 the grade 6 students went on a school camp.
Airtime 360- Airtime was the first stop. Everyone jumped around and had lots of fun playing dodgeball, and face planting in the foam pit (Mr Jones especially.)
Port Arthur- When we went to Port Arthur everyone learned about convicts and their history at that colony. We also had a cruise where we explored The Isle of the Dead and the rest of the area.
Cascade Female Factories- we went on a magical journey through time to see what life was like living in the female factories as Mary Jane.
Parliament House- We had a tour around Parliament House and met Ruth Forest, Anita Dow and Roger Jaensch. We witnessed two bills trying to be passed.
Hobart Museum- We went to the Aboriginal section where we saw their bark huts. We went to the Antarctic section and saw tons of animals that live there and actual Antarctic ice.
Camp Blue Lagoon- Camp Blue Lagoon was the best camp any of us had ever been to. The food was amazing and they did the best job of taking care of us. The games room was a lot of fun and the giants 30m slide and gaga pit. We had an amazing talent show with many fantastic performers, Mrs Jackson did some lovely dancing and we had a lot of singers, dancers and more!
Thank you so much Blue Lagoon, teachers, parents and the bus driver!

School Association change of date
The next School Association meeting will now be held on Tuesday 29 October @ 6pm in the staff room.
Agenda items include, 2020 School levies and pricing of sports top.
As a general member of the school community you are welcome to attend these meetings as an observer. Please note though, due to the operation of the School Association constitution, only elected members are able to vote on motions.
In 5A we have been focusing on artists from around the world and being inspired to create our own pieces based on that artist.
5A also showed their creative flair in our book week responses to the book, Australian Birds by Matt Chun.
Well done to all participating children in the cross country on Wednesday. It was a great display of tenacity and resilience from all the children. Thank you to all the parents and relatives that made it along to support the children, it certainly adds to the atmosphere of the day and appreciated by all.
Congratulations to our placegetters.

A Spotlight on our Values - To Dream and To Believe
Somerset Primary was represented on the weekend at the Northern Tasmanian Schools’ Dressage and Show Jumping competition in Westbury. George, Theo, Ella and Alyssa made up our team. They did a fantastic job with their combined score in the dressage on Saturday earning them 3rd place and their combined results in the showing jumping on Sunday earning them 2nd place.
This is a special achievement as it is the first time that Somerset Primary has had enough participants to constitute a team. All four students should feel very proud as they have been working towards this goal for a long time.
Review of National Funding Arrangements for Kindergartens – survey for parents:
An independent review (the Review) is being conducted into the national funding arrangements that support access by all children in Australia to 600 hours per year of quality early childhood education in the year before full-time school.
For Tasmania this is our Kindergarten year. Since 2008, the Australian Government’s UANP funding has supported an increase to 15 hours per week of Kindergarten in Tasmania, however the future of national funding is uncertain beyond 2020.
Tasmania has a long and proud history of providing free access to quality early learning and the Tasmanian Government has made substantial investments to support and expand this provision.
It is important that the success of Kindergarten in Tasmania is clearly understood in this national process and we encourage the Tasmanian education community, including parents, teachers, and leaders to participate in the review.
How you have your say:
- Complete the survey – online survey
- Write a public submission which closes at 11.59pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) 6 October 2019. You can email your submission to UANPReview@NousGroup.com.au
