Welcome to our 2020 school year
Once again we have had a fantastic start to the school year. All students seemed genuinely excited to be back at school and connect with their friends and class groups. We have started off the year with a big focus on an orderly learning environment and have made a few adaptions to make this more visible – especially after break times where students now line up in POD groups before moving to their classroom.

Welcome Breakfast
We would love everyone to join us for a Welcome Breakfast on Wednesday the 19th February.
We have decided to hold a breakfast this year rather than an after school BBQ to try and reach all families in our school community.
Come along and enjoy:
- a piece of toast and fruit
- a meet and greet with staff
- a wander around classrooms
- a drink from the coffee van (please bring some spare coins for this)
Time: 8:15am – 9:00am.
We hope you can join us.
Relaxation and break times
This year one of our school priorities is wellbeing and an action for this is the introduction of mindfulness or relaxation across the whole school. To preserve our important 90 minute learning blocks we have made some changes to eating and break times. Below is the new school timetable, it has no impact on starting or finishing times but good to know if you need to drop off recess or lunch.
9:15-10:45 Learning Block 1
10:45-11:05 Recess eating and play
11:05-12:35 Learning Block 2
12:35-1:15 Lunch eating and play
1:15-1:30 - Moving into class and whole school relaxation
1:30-3:00 - Learning Block 3
New Sport’s Uniform
We think our new sport’s tops for Grade 3-6 students look great. We want students to get good wear of these so please see below all the times they can be worn:
- To school on PE days (Monday, Wednesday or Thursday)
- Gr 3-6 and Gr 5/6 Sports’ Day
- North West Athletics
- North West Cross Country
- School sport such as netball and cricket
- Triathlon
Please note this list may grow so read special activity notes carefully.
There will be another opportunity to order a sports top in term 2 for those that didn't order one at the end of last year.
Calendar
Coming home with your newsletter today is a magnetic yearly calendar of our known events so you can place in a visible spot in your home. As you would appreciate, schools are ever changing places and we may need to add items or refine as the year proceeds. However, we will keep you informed of any changes as soon as we can through our app or Facebook page.
Hats
Due to our Sun Smart Policy, all students need to wear a school hat when outdoors for all of Term 1 and until 30 April. These can be purchased at our School Office for $8. Students without a hat will be asked to play under shade.
Breakfast Club
Breakfast Club is up and going already this year and will continue to run every Monday, Tuesday and Friday. We are having a real focus this year that students remain in the breakfast club area when eating rather than taking their food back to classroom or into the playground.
Parking and traffic flow
To get the end of the day routines moving smoothly and to avoid congestion could you please be mindful of the following:
- Moving traffic has the right of way
- If you are attempting to reverse out of parking spaces please be patient and wait until the flow of traffic has cleared – we do not want cars waiting and traffic flow to be stopped while someone is reversing out
- If possible reverse into the straight parking spaces
- Parking or standing in the pick-up/drop-off zone is not permitted between 8:45-9:15am and 2:45-3:15pm
- When pulling in to collect your child, move your car to the front of the line to allow other cars access into the area
- Try another lap or find a park in a designated area if your child is late to the pick-up zone
- Avoid double parking in the pick-up area as it becomes very dangerous when students attempt to walk between the cars
- The 5 minute parking bay is just for Kinder parents to do a quick pick up and drop off for their Kinder child. If you have children in older classes please move your car to a designated car spot or do a lap to meet them in the main pick up zone.
- Delay arriving to school until after 3:00pm as teachers do not dismiss students until 3:00pm. It may be best to alter your family’s pick up time to 3:10 as this allows your child time to move to the pick-up area (and avoids the rush).
Members of the Leadership Team are always on duty in this area and are sometimes accompanied by our Adopt A Cop Richard Douglas to keep all members of our school community safe and to ensure the efficiency of the area. Unfortunately in the past members of our school community have been disrespectful and in some cases verbally abusive to staff when reminded of the rules. Please note, that all staff and Constable Douglas have the authority to request parents/visitors to move their vehicle and follow the rules above (please see point 3.2 of the Respectful School Volunteer and Visitor Behaviour Policy).
3.2 Roads on Somerset Primary campus
The control of traffic at a school campus is a school matter, and the principal and delegates have the right to instruct anyone operating a vehicle to follow the conditions under which vehicles may be driven, ridden, parked and removed from the school campus.
All drivers on campus are expected to observe the speed limit of 10 km per hour and abide by road traffic signs including parking conditions (time limited parking, drop off and pick-up zones, and staff parking).
All bicycles should be stored in designated areas.
If the rules are not observed, a member of staff has the authority to ask drivers to abide by the rules and move their car. The school may also withdraw permission to enter the school campus, remove a vehicle parked contrary to the signage at the owner’s expense or any other response the school deems necessary to maintain a safe and functional space for others at the school.
We would really appreciate your support and extra care within our car parks and pick up zone as we make this a safer place before and after school.
You have already recieved an updated permission and consent form or Validation form. It would be greatly appreciated if they could be returned asap. We have created a video to help you with completing this form as it is quite complex. Alternatively you can call into the office and we will help you complete it. If you are unable to locate your form, copies are available from the office.
Would you like your newsletter emailed or a paper copy?
If you wish to have a paper copy of the newsletter sent home with your eldest child at the school please complete the below section and return it to the school.
We have sent a paper copy to the eldest in the family this week but in a hope to reduce the amount of paper we consume we will only be sending future copies to those that request it. Alternatively you can have it emailed or subscribe to the Schoolzine App.

Medications at School – Parent/Guardian’s Responsibilities
Often school staff are asked to administer medications to children.
They can be non- prescribed, (over the counter medicine such as Panadol) or prescribed, (by a doctor, such as antibiotics).
Parents/guardians must complete and sign Administration of Medication Authorisation Form A (Parent/Guardian) for both prescription and non-prescription medication. This allows parents to authorise school staff to give medication to their children and tells the staff about the medication, when it should be given and if the child can take it themselves.
For prescription medication we also require parents to supply an Administration of Prescribed Medication Authorisation Form B (Doctor/Pharmacist/Practice Nurse). This form must be signed by either, the doctor, the pharmacist where you bought the medication or a practice nurse from your doctor’s surgery. This form tells staff about the dose, when the medication is to be given and any possible side effects of the medication.
It is parents/guardian’s responsibility to inform the school of any changes to their children’s medications and to supply the correct forms.
If a student is required to bring medication to school because they will be staying at an alternative residence, it is required that the medication is handed in at the office to be stored for the day and be collected after school.
Under no circumstances is medication to be left in a child’s school bag.
The athletic carnival will take place weather permitting on Wednesday 26 February. Children will need to have appropriate clothing for hot and cold weather, hat, sunscreen and plenty to drink. Parents and friends are welcome to come and join us and help cheer on our three house teams in some friendly competition, starting at 9.30 am on the school grounds. Parents and friends are requested to set up to watch the events from the southern boundary of the oval. This will allow teachers ease of supervision of children and make movement with class groups to different locations within the oval to flow. In the event of poor weather, the carnival will be postponed until Thursday 27 February. Children will be sitting with their own team, Murchison (purple), Bass (white) or Cam (orange). If children could wear a top or coloured ribbon of their house colour, this would really help with marshalling, other children identifying their team members and making the recording of results much easier.
HELP!!!!!
Unfortunately this year we can’t get the sports leaders from Burnie High to assist with running the finish line, so we need your help. If you are free that day and can come to our aid, it would be most appreciated. Please leave your name at the office if you can assist.

Physical Education Teacher
Physical Education this year will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. To enable the children to fully participate in the wide range of activities, it would be highly beneficial for them to have shoes that enable them to run safely and either shorts or tracksuit trousers to allow ease and comfort of movement. In addition, if your child is unable to participate at any stage, could they bring a brief note reflecting this.
