School Improvement Plan
This year we have three main priorities that we will be focussing our energies on:
- Writing – this will involve all teaching staff being involved in an inquiry with Havenview Primary, Burnie Primary, Ridgley Primary and Yolla District School to improve student outcomes. The focus of the inquiry has not yet been determined as it will involve teachers reflecting on student and teacher data to identify the common learner centred problem and the problem of practice.
- Wellbeing and emotional regulation – after reflecting on the Student Wellbeing Data we identified that 56% of our Grade 4-6 students do not feel confident regulating their emotions. Due to this we are going to implement the Zones of Regulation as a whole school approach to help students gain skills in consciously regulating their emotions and actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving abilities. We will keep you informed as once we commence implementation you may notice your child using different language to describe how they are feeling.
- Access, Participation and Engagement – in a recent student engagement survey with our Grade 3-6 students we discovered that students were more motivated by learning that was hands on, collaborative and involved investigating and presenting information in different ways. Due to this we will be focussing on a more inquiry based approach, digital technologies and STEAM. We have been very fortunate to be one of four schools chosen to be part of a Powerful Pedagogies inquiry which will guide our work with this priority.
Colour Run
We will be holding our Colour Run Fundraiser on the 20th March at around 2:00pm. Please look out for a note early next week which will contain more information about what students will need. It has been great to see the support of this fundraiser with almost $8000 raised online. Keep up the great work.
3A enjoyed their Painting the Principal prize for the class with the most profiles.
We have some excess stock of sports tops available for sale. This will be via a first in best dressed arrangement. They are $27 each and we have 11 size 12, 7 size 14 and 1 size small available. Another order will be put out in early term 2. Just a reminder that these are for students in Grades 3 to 6.
In 3B, we have been learning about rules and their consequences as part of our HASS unit. Some of our wonderings led us to inquire about different rules in different cultures. We found it very interesting that some of our accepted social norms are quite different compared to other countries. Here are a few of the norms in different cultures that we learnt about!
We have also been very creative while learning how to effectively use water colour paints alongside oil pastels and permanent markers. We drew and painted vibrant sunflowers and we love how they brighten up our classroom!
In 3A we have been learning about fact families. We practised writing fact families and shared them with our friends. There are 3 different numbers in a fact family and you can rearrange them to make 4 number sentences. We are learning to use the word inverse. Inverse is where you solve the problem and then do the opposite or reverse sign. For example, 7-1=6, the inverse is 6+1=7.
In Visual Art, we have been learning about lines. We have explored lots of different kinds of lines, including curly, wavy, zig zag, scalloped, thick and thin. We have discovered that when lines join up they make angles and shapes and that lines are also used to make patterns. We used our knowledge about lines to create a Zentangle-inspired turtle artwork.

Student Wellbeing Survey
The wellbeing of our students is important to us.
To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in Years 4, 5 & 6 at Somerset Primary School will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.
The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
The details for the survey are:
When: Monday 30th March until Wednesday 8th March 2020
Who: Grades 4, 5 & 6 students
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Years 4, 5 & 6 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact Amanda Lloyd
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
Somerset Primary School will be visited by a mobile dentist. All students can access the dentist at no charge as long as we have a completed consent form.
The dental team arrive on Monday 30th March 2020 and will be based here in our school for about a week.
Forms were sent home with strudents yesterday and need to be returned by Friday 20th March 2020.
