End of Term
The weather may have been wet and gloomy for most of this term, however, our students have been shining in the classroom. As the term comes to a close we have been reviewing data form external and internal assessments and are thrilled with the growth in student learning, particularly in Literacy which has been a priority area for us over the last four years. Next term we will share some of this positive data with you once staff have had the opportunity to analyse and discuss.
Respectful Schools
Over the coming months you may see tv commercials, posters in our school and bus advertising. This is part of an awareness campaign, that is aimed at stopping offensive behaviour towards staff in Tasmanian schools. The simple message coming out of the campaign is that disrespect in schools is crossing the line and that is not ok.
Our school is committed to providing a safe and secure workplace for all staff, as well as a safe environment for students to learn. We are working to eliminate any instances of offensive behaviour from adults directed towards school staff.
Most school community members respect schools and staff. However, at times schools deal with unacceptable adult behaviour, which may include aggressive, threatening, or violent behaviour. This can occur in the presence of students.
This campaign has been developed by the Department of Education which included involvement from Principals, school staff and parents.
Some of the key messages from the campaign are:
- Everyone has the right to feel respected and safe at school, including school staff. It’s not just a courtesy, it’s the law.
- The best outcomes for children come when schools and parents work together respectfully.
- Respectful behaviour in our schools is everyone’s right and everyone’s responsibility.
If you would like to discuss any part of the campaign or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact marketing@education.tas.gov.au
School Holidays
School holidays commence this Friday the 24th September. I hope everyone has a safe and restful break. We look forward to seeing you all on Monday 11th October when Term 4 commencesOur two amazing students Kasey and Tahlia did a fantastic job at the recent state BMX Championships. Tahlia finished in 1st place in the U11 Girls Division and Kasey placed 1st in the U12 Girls Division. Two awesome results for our talented girls. Maybe we might see the in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics one day :)
Gymnastics
This term all classes have been working through a unit of lessons for gymnastics and circus skills. Within each lesson, activities involved the movement patterns of landing, statics, locomotion, balance, rotation and springing. Each lesson has a strong emphasis on confident body management, with an integral part of the children’s interaction with each other, to follow and adhere to safety considerations.
Swimming and Water Safety
Children in grades three to six participated in the ten day swimming and water safety program.
Prior to this the children worked through a theory lesson in preparation. Topics covered were:
- Safe to least safe places to swim and what makes a body of water least safe.
- Aquacode – swim together, float and wave, reach to rescue
- Hyperthermia
- Conservation of heat and energy
- Use of lifejackets
- The most important person in a rescue being the rescuer
- Lifesaving strokes versus swimming strokes
With the campaign to follow, the practical skills of stroke development, water skills and water safety drills, are then developed to suit each individuals stage of development.
Five/Six sports day
In week three of term, all children in Grades Five and Six participated in their sports day, with other schools from the area and could choose their sport from a list of ten on offer. Following on from this day, there were eleven children chosen from Somerset to represent the Darwin (Burnie) area and to play their chosen sport, against Devon (Devonport) teams. Following on from this day, four children from Somerset made it into the North West team to play in their sport against Launceston.
Cross Country
The term culminated with the school cross country event for all children. Long distance running is challenging and for this reason the primary children can nominate to run the medal event (two laps ) or fun run ( 1 lap ) to allow all children to participate at a level they feel confident in. All participants from Prep to grade six, then earn house points to determine the winning house.
Congratulations to our fantastic home readers. Recently, we have celebrated 50, 100, 150 and 200 nights of home reading across the school.
We have six of our students reaching over 200 nights, so as well as a certificate of recognition, they also received a special badge.
There is still a term of home reading left, so students can get busy reading and filling in their reading logs, ready for our next set of certificates to be given out towards the end of the term.
Home reading isn’t just about a student reading aloud. Home reading can include fiction or non-fiction, recipes, instructions, internet research or letters. Home reading also includes a text being read to a student, maybe by an adult or an older sibling, or students can read together with an adult. For more information about reading with children, Kaye Lowe (Australian literacy consultant) has an informative website worth a look. Advice for Parents | readwritesuccess.com

Burnie High School Production
Our school recently attended Burnie High School’s production of Sleeping Beauty. Half the school attended on Thursday 9th of September and the other half attended on Friday 17th of September. There were quite a few familiar faces in the production along with 2 of the lead roles being ex-Somerset students.
The production was very well rehearsed and acted, the band did a fantastic job with music as well, and there was even a small amount of audience participation. The play is around 2 hours and 15 minutes long and is full of humour and references to different places in Tasmania.
The production obviously wasn’t rushed and is very well polished and perfected. It is a really good adaption of a classic fairy tale like most Burnie High School Productions are. We are very lucky as a school to have been allowed to see it.
Our cross country event was a great day and so heartening to see the children take on the challenge of long distance running. Thank you to the family members that could make it along to cheer and support the children, your effort is much appreciated.

Build Smart Devices with the Team at Bitlink!
Have you ever wondered how the gadgets in our everyday lives work? Have you seen how streetlights turn on automatically at night when it gets dark? Have you wondered how smart watches are able to detect and count people's steps? In this workshop, learn how to build your own smart devices using the Bitlink Internet of Things Kit. You'll find out how to use sensors to detect things in the environment, how to program buttons and displays and how to create gadgets that solve problems using some electronics and a little bit of computer programming. If you've ever wanted to get behind the scenes and learn how computer really work, these workshops are for you!
School Holiday Program – How to Make a Device Smart (Ages 9+)
Thursday 30 September 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Thanks to University of Tasmania we have Bitlink kits for you to explore and have fun with.
Each kit includes a micro:bit, a sensor:bit, and ten input/output devices (sensors, motors, lights, and more).
