Refocus Teaching and Learning in the Early Years initiative
We are pleased to share that our school has been participating in the Department of Education’s Refocus Teaching and Learning in the Early Years initiative since 2017 and will continue into 2021.
The initiative is informed by the National Quality Standard (NQS) including The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) for Australia, the Australian Curriculum (AC) and relevant parts of the Tasmanian Education Act 2016. It supports our teachers to deliver quality, evidence based teaching and learning from birth to eight years of age.
As a school we see children as being capable, competent and resilient. We value their rich sense of wonder and knowledge. We recognise that every child brings with them deep curiosity and an innate inquisitiveness which drives their interest to understand their world and their place within it.
The RTL initiative involves our staff undertaking regular professional learning that is focussed on strengthening quality practice in the early years.
You may notice changes that include:
- Re-organisation of classroom environments both inside and outside
- New ways of sharing/recording your child’s learning
- Play and inquiry approaches being embedded in practice to extend children’s learning experiences and achievements
- Educators exploring new approaches to teaching and learning
We look forward to sharing with you our ongoing learnings and are excited about strengthening our knowledge of quality practice in the early years. Please do not hesitate to talk with your child’s teacher for further information.

On Wednesday a group of 28 runners represented the school at the North West Primary Schools Sports Association cross country held at Ulverstone. All the runners put their best effort forward and competed in a very creditable, positive and respectful manner, both on the field in their respective races and cheering their team mates on while sitting in the grandstand.

METAPHOR POEMS
Grade 6A have created emotion metaphor poems. We talked about why and when we feel different emotions and how they are linked to our experiences and prior knowledge. We then investigated just how powerful metaphors can be when constructing texts. The students chose an emotion and then link their writing with that emotion. All our poems are being entered into the Eisteddfod poetry competition. Here is a link to just a few of our poems.
Clay Creations
In Grade 1B we have been exploring nature and we were lucky to have Cate Zayons come in to help us work with clay, we pressed plants into the clay and then moulded them to make beautiful dishes.
The final glazed dishes, all unique and all amazing.
